Acute flaccid myelitis
A condition, now referred to as acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), was first reported by California neurologists in 2012. The clinical picture of AFM patients is similar to that of poliomyelitis, but they are not infected with poliovirus. The specific cause(s) of this syndrome is still under investigation. To better characterize these cases and identify potential cause(s), the California Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are currently conducting enhanced surveillance.
